Modular Speaker System
An ongoing self-initiated collaboration between STÜDYO.STUDIO and LITOS, exploring a modular approach to speaker design, fabrication and sound.
The project began with a shared interest in music, objects and the spaces in which we experience sound. Our ambition is to develop a speaker system that moves away from the traditional fixed enclosure, instead creating a flexible and adaptable structure capable of evolving across different environments and applications.
At the centre of the concept is an external structural framework constructed from standard aluminium extrusion components and off-the-shelf fixings. This exoskeleton forms the primary structure of the speaker, allowing individual plywood enclosures and components to be attached directly to it. Rather than permanently fixing each enclosure together, the system uses the aluminium structure to bring the individual elements into compression. A membrane positioned between the plywood components creates an airtight seal, allowing the speaker enclosure to function acoustically while remaining completely demountable. This approach creates opportunities beyond the initial object. Components can be assembled, disassembled, replaced and reconfigured, making the system easier to transport, repair and adapt. Different speaker drivers, tweeters, horns and enclosures can potentially be introduced or exchanged without requiring an entirely new speaker to be built.
The initial exploration focuses on a domestic listening system, but the underlying modularity of the concept creates the potential for much wider applications. The system could be adapted for retail environments, listening rooms and commercial spaces, with the potential to scale into larger installations for immersive experiences, temporary events and pop-up environments. The collaboration brings together two complementary areas of expertise. LITOS, led by Raul Sauchelli, contributes a deep connection to music and sound culture alongside technical knowledge and experience in digital fabrication and 3D printing. This opens up opportunities to prototype and develop bespoke components, including horns, tweeter housings, cones and other plastic elements. STÜDYO.STUDIO brings the spatial, structural and material approach to the project, focusing on the construction of the external framework, timber enclosures and the physical relationship between each component.
Currently in its discovery and development phase, STÜDYO.STUDIO x LITOS is an ongoing exploration of materials, manufacturing processes and modular construction. The next stage of the project will move these ideas into physical prototypes, testing how the system performs structurally, acoustically and visually.
